Well, the wait is over. College football is back.
The 2018 season opens with a really interesting matchup — much more interesting than most of you would think.
Duquesne travels to UMass to kick things off. UMass comes in as a prohibitive 23 point favorite after a strong 2017 finish while extending coach Mark Whipple’s contract. But, in the words of ESPN’s Lee Corso, “Not So Fast.”
On the UMass side of things, there is reason to be optimistic. Senior quarterback Andrew Ford returns after a bang up 2017 where he threw for 22 touchdowns while only giving up four interceptions. You could make an argument that UMass should have beat Tennessee last year on the road, so there are big things on the horizon, especially when you factor in that they almost beat Mississippi State too.
But, Duquesne brings some weapons to the table that most people simply won’t know about. One, the bring a talented transfer quarterback in Daniel Parr, who left Florida Atlantic and Lane Kiffin for a chance to start right away. In addition, add two All Americans — running back AJ Hines and wideout Nehari Crawford — to the mix and the Dukes create all kinds of problems on offense.
Putting my neck out is what I do, so I am taking Duquesne and the points. The over/under is all over the board right now, stopping at 67.5. I think there will be plenty of fireworks in this game, but as a season opener, factoring in Duquesne has several transfers on offense, I am taking the over too.
PICKS: Duquesne plus 23. Over 67.5.
