I bet they are sure glad to finally be playing football in Columbus. Coach Urban Meyer starts his three game suspension for the Zach Smith debacle while his Buckeyes start their 2018 season at home against the Oregon State Beavers. The Buckeyes are big favorites (-38) but, in the words of the legendary Lee Corso from ESPN, “not so fast.”
As will be expected, Ohio State will put relentless pressure on Oregon State, starting with All American defensive end Nick Bosa. Defesnively, the Buckeyes boast one of the finest defenses in the country. But, there is no way of getting around it — Ohio State has had a huge distraction. Ryan Day has been about as impressive as a interim coach can be, but nobody is talking about Ohio State’s college football team, while everyone is talking about Meyer’s suspension.
On the other side, you have Oregon State, who brings in new coach Jonathan Smith to kick start a dismal few years. Smith will not be afraid of the Shoe — he was the quarterback on the best team in Beaver history, the 11-1 Fiesta Bowl champs of 2001. Couple that fact with the fact that Smith tutored under Chris Peterson at Washington, and you have the makings of a very interesting coaching match up. Peterson and his teams have won on the biggest stages in college football. Also, in kind of a weird twist to Oregon State football, coach Mike Riley is back in Corvallis as an advisor. Riley has won big, big games against top ranked opponents during his three times coaching at Oregon State. I don’t expect the Beavers to win, but I think the game will be competitive.
PICK: Oregon State +38.
