Prairie View A&M takes on Rice, two teams looking to build new identities, as their 2018 college football seasons get under way.

Both teams are starting new eras as their first year coaches try to turn things around.

At Rice, Mike Bloomgren takes over after honing his offensive skills at Stanford under David Shaw.  That alone tells you Rice is going away from their spread offense to a more ball control, jam-it-down-your-throat type of team.  Expect to see a lot of double-tight sets and there is not doubt Bloomgren will bring a toughness to the table Rice has not seen for some time.

Eric Dooley is running things now at Prairie View after a stint at Grambling.  In my opinion, Dooley has a much easier job getting things rolling since the Panthers finished the season on a three-game win streak. Ted White takes over as offensive coordinator after doing a nice job at Arkansas Pine-Bluff, so expect Prairie View to be explosive at times.

The game is a tough read to start the season, but I am inclined to take the points and Prairie View.  They have a ton of speed all over the field on offense and two quarterbacks who have played significant minutes. Additionally, since Rice will go to a more ball-control type offense, I am playing the under.

PICKS:  Prairie View plus 18.5.  Under 60.0.
