The Top Dog, number one handicapper at Sportswatchplus, started his 2018 football season with a solid 10-5 record. Picking only straight bets in the NFL preseason Saturday, TTD went 5-2 including picking the Chicago Bears, a plus 4.5 underdog, to win outright. His college numbers included the under in the Wyoming game, picking a winner on a Saturday where college football was unpredictable to say the least.
In the NFL, The Top Dog took the Los Angeles Rams -2.5, only to see the Texans press right to the end in a losing effort. However, their late game push covered at 21-20. The Indianapolis Colts were slight favorites at home as Andrew Luck continued to improve. While is was expected the 49ers would play better, so that game bit us in the rear when Indianapolis covered at 23-17. The Pittsburgh Steelers, Jacksonville Jaguars, and New Orleans Saints were all wins, while the most intriguing game played all weekend was Baltimore at Miami. To date, no NFL defense has had an answer for Lamar Jackson, and Saturday was no different. Sportswatchplus took the Ravens in an easy win at Miami. Besides going 7-10 for 98 yards and a score, Jackson rushed three times for 39 yards, a 13 yard average.
We learned a few things from a betting standpoint to start the college football season. One, UMass is better on offense then in the past. They put up 63 on Duquesne in the opener. That may not seem like much against a lesser opponent, but Duquense had 14 transfers so people thought they were pretty good on defense. Andrew Ford is an experienced quarterback and showed it Saturday, while Bilal Ally and Andy Isabella both caught passes for over 100 total yards. Wyoming has playmakers on defense. We knew they were going to be pretty good, but their run defense was exceptional against New Mexico State. Now, I know it is New Mexico State, but the Aggies are committed to running the football and the Cowboys completely shut them down. They have elite pass rushers and a top secondary, anchored by All American safety Andrew Wingard. How good was the defensive effort Saturday night? With a minute to go in the first half, New Mexico State had yet to get a first down.
Hawai’i was the surprise of the opening weekend. They are going to give people fits on offense. Cole McDonald, an unproven commodity coming into Saturday, lit Colorado State up in all aspects of the game. McDonald passed for over 400 yards and rushed for another 95 in a dominating performance. McDonald passed for three touchdowns and rushed for two while CSU had no answers. The Rams made it close by scoring late, 43-34, but the score does not indicate how dominate Hawai’i was on this day. Except them to make plenty of noise before the season is over.
Three games were split to start the season, then saw Wyoming with a performance expected from them. The Top Dawg finished 5-3, with winners being Prairie View and the points, the over in the PV game; the over in the Hawai’i win; and Wyoming and the under in the Cowboys big opening day win.
