Saratoga, Del Mar Summer Race Meets Come to an End this Week
Saratoga and Del Mar, the two iconic race meets held in thoroughbred racing each summer, come to a close this next weekend.
Both tracks saw superstars start to emerge as Catholic Boy dominated the Runhappy Travers Stakes for 3 year olds and Accelerate ran off on them in the Pacific Classic. Both horses are starting to make a strong case for top honors in their divisions, so the Fall and the Breeders Cup should really be interesting.
At Saratoga, where the night life is second to none in racing, Chad Brown dominated the turf races but his best dirt horses, including 2 year old champion Good Magic, struggled. The Del Mar meet has seen a trainer have a meet for the ages. John Sadler won eight stakes races at the surfside meet, dominating the biggest races of the summer like nobody has ever done before. To say Sadler was on a roll would be an understatement.
Javier Castellano won his sixth Travers Stakes, putting him in rarified air for the mid-summer Derby. On the West Coast, rising superstar Drayden Van Dyke had a race day for the ages, winning 7 races at Del Mar on one single card.
Both tracks rap up their 2018 summer meets this weekend with big stakes days. Saratoga features eight stakes races from Friday to Monday highlighted by the $500,000 Woodward Stakes on Saturday. Del Mar, too, has eight stakes races planned, featuring the $300,000 Del Mar Debutante for 2 year old fillies. Quite an end to a fabulous summer.
