Thanksgiving just got a little more interesting.
Tiger Woods, the greatest golfer to ever play the game, and Phil Mickelson, arguably the greatest shot maker to ever pick up a club, will play a winner-take-all 18-hole match in Las Vegas the Friday after Thanksgiving. The made-for-television event will be 18 holes, match play, and the two players and their caddies will wear microphones throughout the entire match.
The purse, $9,000,000, was lowered at the request of the PGA Tour. Their Fed Ex Championship carries a $10,000,000 winners share, so the tour did not want the Tiger/Phil match to meet that same purse standard.
The dynamic of the match is really interesting.
Woods is starting to find his groove right about now, while Mickelson has struggled as of late. But, it was Mickelson doing all the trash talking when the two players announced this week that the event is a go.
“I bet you think this is the easiest $9,000,000 you will ever make,” cracked Mickelson to Woods when Tiger tweeted “It’s On !”.
There will be side games during the 18 hole match including longest drive, closest to the pin, best bunker shot and the like.
The fact that this match is taking place is a miracle in its own right. These two guys, early in their careers, didn’t like each other. Woods has always been more stoic, while Mickelson has been more fun loving and gregarious. But, over the past few years, they have become friends, growing over the years to respect each other’s accomplishments.
The match will take place at Shadow Creek Golf Club, one of the most exclusive golf courses in Vegas.
