The City of Chicago has always had a love affair with the Chicago Cubs, but none so more than recently, when Joe Maddon took over the helm as manager. To say the quirky Maddon is beloved in Chi Town would be an understatement.
Maddon took over the Cubs in 2015 and, when he was hired, the decision by General Manager Theo Epstein was as controversial as it was unpopular. That quickly changed when Maddon took the Cubs to the National League Championship series, where they lost to the New York Mets. Interestingly enough, when the Cubs won the NLDS that year, beating St. Louis, it was the first time Chicago had ever clinched a series at Wrigley Field.
Things, of course, got better the next season when Chicago won a thrilling World Series with the Cleveland Indians, beating the Indians in game 7. It was Chicago’s first World Series title in 108 years.
Since then, things have quieted down in Chicago, but that doesn’t mean their team is any less loved. They made the playoffs again last year, and Maddon can’t go anywhere without someone buying him a drink.
This year, Chicago is poised to make another fantastic run. They lead the Brewers in the National League Central, while sporting the best record in the National League. If that keeps up, the Cubs, led by their maniac fans and their love affair with their manager, will be ultra tough to beat with home field advantage in the playoffs.
